Soldiers and Sailors Club match on Barkers Pond
Barkers pond a Soldiers and Sailors AC club water hosted this latest club match with a very low turnout of only 7 anglers. Pleasure anglers enjoy the carp and tench fishing on this venue, but it is less popular with the club match anglers. Very often a decent weight will win the match, but the backing weights can drop off quite dramatically.
As normal for this time of year slighty cooler nights cause a overnight dew that wets the car windows, and the ground undergrowth. The morning started quite bright with only a slight breeze blowing towards peg 1. The weather then turned cloudy throughout the day but remained rain free and with a top temperature of around 18 degrees centigrade.
Barkers pond is a Soldiers and Sailors club water which is not normally used as a match venue, and is not stocked to the levels of a commercial fishery. The water has remained coloured and looks as it could fish really well, but matches do seem to put pressure on this pond and match weights can be very varied.
This match did fish quite hard with no big carp caught. Mussel baits are very often favoured by pleasure anglers on this water, and Malc Munn used them with a devasting effect to win the last Barkers match with a 30lb plus net of carp and tench. On this match mussels failed to produce any fish for anglers that tried them.
Alan Welch made good use of a form peg which also won the last match on Barkers pond in May. Having drawn on peg 11, the first one on the Railway bank near the corner Alan pinned his faith in pellet hook baits to catch 11-6-0 of mostly carp, the biggest around the 4lb mark.
The club match Secretary Paul Marriott took the second place with 10-4-0 from peg 7. Fishing the pole and using various baits kept the mainly small fish, carp, tench and silvers coming to weigh 10-4-0.
Drawn on peg 2 ‘yours truly’ took the third place with 7-15-0 of pole caught fish. Apart from a 1.5lb carp and a 1.5lb tench the rest were small carp and silvers caught at 8m on maggott, worm and pellet.
Fourth place was claimed by Malc Munn who won the last match on Barkers with 6-8-0 from peg 1. Janet Skinner had three carp for 4-9-0 and fifth place. Joint sixth was Dave kent and Paul Skinner, both with 2-6-0.
