Rycroft Moat 15th April 2018

15/04/2018 by Dave Cotterill

Round 3 of the Spring BAG-UP 2018 fished at Rycroft on the Moat

The Moat lake at Rycroft was revisited and hosted the penutimate round of this year’s Spring BAG-UP with a planned 24 anglers in six teams completing. The Moat fished quite well and a number of the recent new carp stockies featured in quite a few of the weights. As is so often the case when first introduce in to a lake they do tend to still shoal up, a bonus if you have drawn on them!.

The Weather

After a wet and dank miserable week the weather is finally turning warmer. The morning started mild and sunny with a light breeze, which helps the fish to feed more confidently. The afternoon still stopped mild, but with gathering dark clouds that just produced a light drizzle.

The Venue

The Moat lake holds 29 pegs, is well stocked, especially with the recent influx of new stock carp that run from 12 ounces to a pound and half. The pegs and banks are also very well maintained and the original stocking of carp go from 3lbs to over double figures. Most of the match weights are usually made up of 2-6lb carp, skimmers can also be caught in some areas when the carp are a bit sparse.

The Winner

Winner Dave Cotterill 64-12-0 peg 5 rycroft moat hemington

Winner Dave Cotterill 64-12-0 peg 5

Round 1 seen ‘yours truely’ on peg 5 which I managed to win from. This penultimate round 3 also saw me on peg 5 again, which I also managed to win!. After feeding the pole line I starting the match with bomb and corn only to see indications on rod tip. A change to the banjo feeder resulted in three stockies, but bites were very slow. After having a look on the pole at 13m with soft pellet this produced a good run of stockies.

Unfortunately after a while the bites tailed of, I think they just had enough and backed off. I could see there were fish moving around further out. The bomb and feeder I tried didn’t do any good, so it was back to the pole at 13m for odd stockies, and skimmers.

I had been trying the hard 6mm pellet at 14.5m at various times but nothing seemed interested. It was only in the last hour and half when I started to get indications and bites. It wasn’t the stockies that were having a go, it was the  bigger older resident carp that produce a good run of fish. The last 20 mins of the match the bites started to slow down again.
At the scales my 64-12-0 was enough to push me in front of the second 60lb weight from Paul Marriott pegged opposite me.

Second

Second Paul Marriott 60-6-0 peg 25 rycroft moat hemington

Second Paul Marriott 60-6-0 peg 25

Paul Marriott on peg 25 also benefited from the stockies by catching them fast on the two plus two line. They were actually coming up in the water for his loose fed meat and meat hookbaits. This line did slow down and got rested while trying his margin swim at the adjacent empty peg.
The margin didn’t produce anything and Paul swapped between the long pole on worm and the short line for odd fish. Paul’s 60-6-0 weight of carp easily secure the second placing.

Third

Second Keith White 49-5-0 peg 21 rycroft moat hemington

Second Keith White 49-5-0 peg 21

The third place came from peg 21 where Keith White had a pretty slow start. After persevering with a soft pellet just up the shelve of the sunken island Keith had a really good run of fish. When that spell came to the end he followed them to the top of the island at 14m on the hard 6mm pellet. At the weigh in Keith had amassed a 49-5-0 net of carp and skimmers for the third placing.

Next Three

Paul Richardson took the fourth place with 43-8-0 from peg 18 on a hybrid feeder and dead reds.  Peg 9 took the fifth place with 33-4-0 for Steve Hoult on pole and pellet baits. The final sixth place went to Les Overmass with 32-8-0 from peg 10.

Next Round

The final round 4 is to fished on the Donington lake next week (22nd April).
