A brief history of the Soldiers and Sailors Fishing Club.
The Soldiers and Sailors fishing Club originated as an angling section of the NFD & DS & S. (Sawley) Club Ltd., and still is today. The present Soldiers and Sailors General club is situated at 421 Tamworth Road Long Eaton which also hosts a large function room, which is regularly hired out for various functions. The longe area apart from comfortable seating has 2 pool tables, and one snooker table plus a Dart board. All the traditional cards, dominoes and bingo activities are a large part of the social club scene.
I’m informed that the original club premises where actually on Wilsthorpe Road near where the present Jehovah Witness Church is today. I’m informed that the original club premises where actually on Wilsthorpe Road near where the present Jehovah Witness Church is today. A new purposely general club was built on Tamworth road Sawley and had a grand opening on the 31st. May 1930 as seen on the photo. In the 1970’s major alterations took place which included the new function room at the rear which covered a area of the rear garden, and the rest was turned into a club car park. The front of the club was completely changed with the main entrance that situated on the front was moved to the left side of the building. Major changes to the bar, and the removal of the old stage in the front room as the rear function room now had all these facilities.
I believe this angling section was possibly started about the 1950’s, with Ernie Race as the secretary. Ernie was also secretary of the general club for a good number of years. Other section’s existed, such as the Racing Pigeon section, Football,Children’s section’s etc.
The Angling club has always hosted a full season of club matches, which used to be held on the River Trent at Trent Lock.Regular away matches were also booked, also with a coach booked to travel to the match. With the restriction on Drivers hours and cost this had to be discontinued.
Unfortunately with a declined in the quality of fishing on the River Trent, and the opening of new commercial type fisheries most of our matches are now on these commercial carp fisheries.
The Angling club is still very much a part of the General Club where all its meeting are held. Unfortunately the Racing Pigeon section closed after a building extension was added to the club building in the 1970’s, and the children’s section has more recently been disbanded.
I will try to gather more information to make this history more accurate and informative.
