About Barkers Pond
Turning in to Wyvern avenue from Tamworth road and continuing to far end you will see Barkers pond on the right hand side after the end of the bungalows.
The Long Eaton area has many Railway dug-out ponds which Barkers pond is one of them. The material that was dug out was used to build the railway line embankments. After the construction of Field Farm road, and the drains in the early 1970’s the ponds water level dropped dramatically. Consequently the average water depth is only 2-3 foot during normal summer levels.
The permanent fishing pegs are of a wooden platform type, or on a level natural bank. A total of 27 pegs are available for fishing. There is easy access to pegs 2-10 as angler’s can park behind their pegs on Wyvern avenue. A short walk on level even ground will access the rest of the pegs, apart from pegs 25-27 on the Bungalow side, which are situated on a very uneven path. Unfortunately no disabled pegs are available at this present time.
Barker’s Pond is open all the year round no close season restrictions apply.
The Tench has always been a natural resident fish that seem to bred successfully year after year. Barkers pond has always been synonymous with tench fishing, they can be caught from a few ounces ( a bar of soap!) up to 5-6 pounds in weight.
Generally fishing only a short distant out using a pole, or waggler, with maggots, casters, corn, meat and pellets on the hook can be successful methods.
Natural carp have always existing in Barkers pond and a restocking program 2007 with 10 ounce carp increased the carp stocks. There has also been a explosion of small carp since 2013 that have bred in the pond. This maybe due to the shallow water that quickly warms up during the spring and summer months, and has suited the carps breeding cycle.
The specimen anglers will target the larger carp, while the smaller carp provide extra action for pleasure anglers. Also for the anglers wanting to catch the silver fish there is a moderate head of roach, and the odd small bream do turn up occasionally. The winter pike fishing sport seems to have declined in recent years.
Day tickets are available from the bailiffs on the bank side currently £3.00 a day, or £5.00 for two rods. Furthermore season tickets are also available to purchase from the bailiffs on the day.
